Everything around us is made up
of solids, lipids, or gases. Despite their obvious differences in physical
appearance, they are all made up of matter and share the same basic structure. Matter is anything that has weight and
takes up space. All matte is composed of basic structure called elements. An element is a substance
that cannot be broken down to other substance by chemical reactions. Elements are
composed of atoms. An atom is the
smallest unit of matter. All atoms are comprised of a nucleus containing
protons and neutrons, with electrons spinning around them. A compound is a
substance consisting of two or more elements combined in a fixed ratio. A molecule is the smallest unit of a
compound, just as an atom is the smallest unit of an element.
